Angela Autumn releases her second album, Believer, on September 11th via Gar Hole Records. Ahead of it she has shared the opening track, Heavy Tobacco, with a video she choreographed herself, made with Jonie on Film in Los Angeles. It follows her single Mountain Stream, released at the end of June. Gar Hole describe the song as a swooning blast of psychedelic indie-folk.
“This is a song about the tobacco spirit,” Autumn explains. “In many cultures, particularly American indigenous, tobacco is regarded for its purification abilities. I don’t think many folks see tobacco as ‘healthy;’ quite the opposite. The message is that anything positive can become harmful when abused. It’s me reflecting upon choices that were necessary but carried both positive and negative consequences.
“Fame feels like something to be chased, with a time limit on our actualization. Smoking is a way of counting moments, of categorizing time. Inevitably our goals and desires will run out and we are left with our legacy, and impact on the earth — consciously or unconsciously.”
Autumn was raised in the Appalachian region of western Pennsylvania and now lives in Nashville. Her debut album, Frontiers Woman, came out in 2021, followed by the 2023 EP Cowboy Jack Clementine and the single Electric Lizard, which pulled her clawhammer banjo playing towards indie rock and found her a far wider audience. Electric Lizard appears on Believer too.
She wrote much of the album outdoors, or close to it: the Tennessee woods, a rural treehouse outside Asheville, a friend’s warehouse in Chattanooga where she slept on the concrete floor at night. “I like to put myself in extreme situations in order to write,” she says. Back in Nashville she recorded with Isaiah Beard, the multi-instrumentalist and producer known as Baerd, capturing more than half the album in a single afternoon at Club Roar with drummer Ross McReynolds before weeks of overdubs: fiddle, cello, keyboards, strings and a good deal of reverb.
Autumn plays an album release show at The Blue Room in Nashville on September 11th, then joins Fink for a European and UK tour running through October and November, with a headline run on the US east coast to follow in December.
Believer arrives in a busy season for Gar Hole. Two Runner releases Porchlight on August 28th and Jude Brothers follows with Dogwood Maiden Voyage on September 25th, while Creekbed Carter Hogan‘s Peasants Revolt, dropped this month – you can read our album review here.
