American composer and theatre artist Sheherazaad has shared her new single Registaan today, taken from her forthcoming debut album Khudgarzi, on November 20th with Erased Tapes.
In her own words, “‘Registaan’ is based in a crass desertland wherein really lonely women emerge. These girls attempt to begin life, where life goes to die. The wilderness of feminine solitude. Brutality as a soothing hymn.”
The single is accompanied by a live video filmed and edited by Vincent Moon.
This album has so much scope that on paper, it seems overwhelming, but the results are staggering, robustly underpinning a spellbinding story of feminine insurgency. Across the album, Sheherazaad explores the “Khudgarz Aurat”, a societal label often levelled against women who assert independence and reject conventional expectations, a space she explores with open-minded vision, accompanied by a “lush ecosystem of 30+ genre-chaotic musicians”, with songs sung in Urdu (with passages in English and Tamil); the album’s emotional undertow was shaped by personal rupture and carries debris of rage and guilt.
‘Khudgarzi’ is out November 20th on Erased Tapes
