Trans folksinger Creekbed Carter Hogan will release a new album, Peasants Revolt, on 24th July via Gar Hole Records. The Saint Paul, Minnesota-based songwriter announces the record alongside lead single Cutbank of Cleves, accompanied by a video directed and edited by Lexi Kiecker.
The single sets the tone for what follows: a rollicking medieval-Americana fable sung by a court jester in the halls of a dying empire. Its lyrics knit Catholic iconography to prizefighter slang and rural Americana — saints (St. Martin, St. James Major, St. Catherine), poisoned wells, grieving widows, double-wide trailers — anchored by a recurring accusation pitched between supplication and indictment: where are your silver pieces for the hungry mouth of God?
Across ten tracks, Hogan binds 14th-century king-killer ballads to Appalachian strike songs, labour anthems to Ethiopian jazz, and old-time folk traditions to contemporary queer storytelling — a lineage they trace from Hazel Dickens and John Prine through to ANOHNI.
The album was written while moving between the North and South, sung by a body both pre- and post-gender-affirming healthcare, and recorded during what Hogan describes as a time of “genocide, federal occupation, and workers’ uprisings”. Transition is its formal as well as personal logic: songs shift midstream, hinging on internal pivots and building into cathartic crescendos powered by sharp hooks and communal spirit.
“The world is ending, and rent is due,” Hogan writes in the album’s accompanying manifesto. “The empire is crumbling, and you’re late refilling your meds. War is ceaseless, pandemics go unchecked, billionaires poison the well water and cops abduct neighbors while wildfires burn… but here at the hot dog stand, relief and joy are yours for five buck ninety-nine.”
At the helm with Hogan is co-producer and engineer Britton Beisenherz. The sprawling cast credited as the Hot Dog Choir includes fiddler Beth Chrisman, drummer Sarah Schultz, multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Verrill (cello, vibraphone, banjo), bassist Nora Predey, pedal steel from Zack Wiggs, saxophonist Hunter Prueger, and backing vocals from Jude Brothers, Carolina Chauffe and Gabriela Torres. Peasants Revolt grapples with capitalism, isolation, labour struggle and state violence but ultimately refuses despair — a record for everyday people trying to live meaningful lives through extraordinary instability.
