We open this week’s Mixtape with our Artists of the Month: Mama’s Broke, and their new single Old-Fashioned Love Song, from their new album Reunion (reviewed here).

“Though we love singing and dancing along to old love songs, we have always found it nearly impossible to write an earnest love song ourselves. It always seems easier to write about heartbreak and disappointment than the feeling of being in love,” Mama’s Broke explains about the track. “This song is an attempt to break through self-made barriers and try to live in the vulnerability of believing in another person.”

Mama's Broke – Reunion

On “Reunion”, Mama’s Broke’s third album, Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria touch the darkest aspects of human life with openness and admirable musical originality. The Nova Scotia duo weave Appalachian and Eastern European traditions into songs that touch on economic inequality, violence against women, and stunningly beautiful, lyrically enigmatic ballads in the spirit of Time (The Revelator)-era Gillian Welch. They find something worth saving in the dark.
