Oisin Mod has shared Mirror Mirror, his first new music since his 2022 debut Honeycomb. The Galway-born singer-songwriter again works with Bill Ryder-Jones, the former Coral guitarist who produced that album and returns behind the desk here.
Honeycomb built on the promise of Mod’s early singles and live dates, among them a support slot for Gruff Rhys. Its mix of candid, wistful writing and spare but melodic arrangements drew comparisons to Elliott Smith, solo Lennon and Mazzy Star, with the 60s and 70s folk storytellers he grew up on — Young, Dylan, Cohen — audible underneath. The record won him shared bills with Lael Neale and Kate Bollinger and his only two headline shows to date, in London and Ireland.
Mirror Mirror picks up where that work left off, pairing the retro swirl of his earlier, pared-back material with the resonant guitar lines, warm analogue keys and gentle vocals that bloomed across the debut. Mod calls it his most introspective and observational writing yet. “Mirror Mirror is about pretending and observing others doing the same,” he says. “It’s looking over your shoulder while talking to you in search of a better option.”
Ryder-Jones rates the partnership highly. “Aside from the sheer quality of the songwriting, musically he’s very minimalistic and melody-led,” he says. “Oisin has a great balance of vision and humility.”
The accompanying video was directed and shot by Mod and Rory Ryan.
Mod has played only a handful of shows, but has built a low-key cult following at home in Ireland and beyond. With more music promised, Mirror Mirror reads as the start of a new chapter.
