Taken from his forthcoming album on Long Echo Records, due October 23rd, listen to Chase Elodia’s hooky new single Run Around, on which the Brooklyn drummer and poet turns love-song clichés inside out. After hearing him sing, you can understand why he has been vocally compared to Arthur Russell, a relationship that’s maybe heightened here by the strong percussive elements, reminiscent of the groove-driven avant-garde music of World of Echo.
Elodia, a Brooklyn-based drummer and poet who tours with indie-folk artist Hudson Freeman, is a new name to these pages, and Real Ones marks his vocal debut on record.
“Run Around is both an ode to a crush and a riposte to overly saccharine love songs,” Elodia says. “Constructed out of moments both real and imagined, it envisions a perfect summer evening with a partner — one that spills into the morning and is filled with music, biking, and a trip to the ocean. But it also turns tired clichés of love, such as ‘I’d give anything for you,’ on their heads. The narrator clarifies that ‘I’d give anything / well, more specifically, I’d give my arm and my brain / all I want are two lips and a pair of legs / to run around, kiss you and sing.'”
Alejandra Sofia joins on vocals towards the end of the track. Sofia, who also performs with Camila Meza, contributes vocals and piano elsewhere on the album alongside guitarist and producer Jack Broza (Forager), Christian Li (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) on synthesizers, and Freeman.
Where his previous album, Have, Know, Want, was shaped by isolation, Real Ones celebrates community. “The songs on this album — in contrast to my previous two — are all personal,” Elodia says. “I lived all of the stories I tell.”
Elodia is planning a tour to support the release.
