Jeremiah Chiu has announced his new album, Edge Conditions, due for release on LP, CD, and digital download on October 9th via International Anthem. Featuring field recordings and voice from Takako Minekawa, drums from SML bandmate Booker Stardrum and Marta Sofia Honer on viola, his lead single, Plastic Mind / Elastic Machines, is accompanied by a feverish and surreal animation by Korey Martin who also created the album’s artwork.
In addition to Minekawa, Honer, and Stardrum, other collaborators on the album include Ben Lumsdaine (drums and percussion), Patrick Shiroishi (saxophone and field recordings), Marquis Hill (trumpet), and Will Miller of Resavoir (EVI).
Chiu shared:
“‘Plastic Mind / Elastic Machines’ was truly the guiding beacon for the entire record. Prior to rediscovering this track, I imagined an album with a more defined ensemble that was less drum-centric. Once I heard this, I felt drawn to follow this direction and let it take me wherever it was headed.”
Chiu has dropped three electro-acoustic duo albums with violist Marta Sofia Honer, including 2025’s Different Rooms, highlighted in these pages for the album’s mix of an intense joie de vivre, fleeting melancholy and a commendable attachment to experimentation, reminiscent of Erik Satie. His quintet, SML and their exploratory kosmische jazz have been on quite a journey (How You Been / Small Medium Large); alongside the hot streak of their individual members, their recent 48 minutes of unedited live improvisation: Spontaneous Music Live, took it all to another leval – fully in-the-moment, mining for that moment of discovery.
Edge Conditions has been described as a shining display of Chiu’s range and depth as both a composer and producer, in which every facet of his collaborative work and sonic personality feels represented.
