Mama's Broke – Reunion

On “Reunion”, Mama’s Broke’s third album, Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria touch the darkest aspects of human life with openness and admirable musical originality. The Nova Scotia duo weave Appalachian and Eastern European traditions into songs that touch on economic inequality, violence against women, and stunningly beautiful, lyrically enigmatic ballads in the spirit of Time (The Revelator)-era Gillian Welch. They find something worth saving in the dark.

The Young Tradition – Oberlin 1968

On the deck: The Young Tradition at Oberlin College in 1968 - “we were a trio of heads who happened to dig traditional folk music.” By 1968, The Young Tradition were popular enough to undertake a US Tour, stopping along the way to perform at Oberlin College, a private liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Oberlin, Ohio, about 35 miles southwest of Cleveland. Unknown to The Young Tradition at the time, their concert was being recorded by an American fan named Steve Mayer using a reel-to-reel tape recorder. The tapes sat in a private collection for nearly half a century until Mayer remembered they existed. It remains the only known live recording of the group.

Various – Playing for the Man At The Door

Playing for the Man at the Door was released three years ago this month (August) via Smithsonian Folkways, the perfect time to put this one on the deck for our next Listening Post. Playing for the Man at the Door is a beautifully presented box set release – a 66-track, two-time GRAMMY-nominated box set offering a riveting glimpse into the fabled archive of folklorist Mack McCormick. The collection features never-before-heard performances spanning blues, gospel, ragtime, country dirges, and more, along with a book featuring stunning photographs from the McCormick collection and contextual essays by producers Jeff Place of Smithsonian Folkways and John Troutman of the National Museum of American History, as well as musicians Mark Puryear and Dom Flemons.

The Leisure Society – Alone Aboard The Ark

We wind back the clock to 2013 for our first Listening Post Feature - The Leisure Society's 'Alone Aboard The Ark' - which includes an album review and an interview with Nick Hemming. For Alone Aboard The Ark, the Leisure Society called in King Kink himself, Ray Davies, utilising his well-equipped Konk recording studio. This may account in part for the warmth of the songs on this record. The use of vintage instruments gives each track a ‘period piece’ feel, and if, at times, the band seem not quite sure which period they are trying to evoke, this is not necessarily a bad thing. The way the musicians feel their way into each song is reminiscent of The Band, although the end product is utterly distinct, due in part to the range of instruments and production techniques on show.
