Welsh fingerstyle instrumental guitar champion Gwenifer Raymond has shared a new single titled Bird Songs for Atomic Skies. The release marks her signing to the Oxford, Mississippi label Fat Possum. The label’s motto, “we’re trying our best”, is a humble statement given the growing collective talent on its roster, including KLOF favourites Jake Xerxes Fussell and The Weather Station.
As her latest press notes say, she has drawn international acclaim for repurposing Mississippi blues and John Fahey’s intricate Americana to reflect her roots in rural South Wales and her interests in folk horror and the avant-garde, inventing a new form dubbed Welsh Primitive. On her new single, the folk horror reaches post-apocalyptic levels…bring your Geiger counter.
“Bird Songs for Atomic Skies is a mutant rag, a blues gone awry. Lyrebirds are perched in irradiated nests and have grown new heads. Foxes bark in the night, but the barks are all wrong. This song is an assembly of sounds run through the wringer of an atomic age; New limbs are springing up by the hour.”
As KLOF’s Glenn Kimpton noted in his review of Raymond’s latest album, Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark, she has taken the instrumental acoustic guitar album to new heights, earning her a well-deserved, growing audience. Her following is set to grow still further as she prepares to support Geese across America and Canada, followed by a UK headline tour.
