We have the pleasure of premiering the video for the new single from Sairie. Tomorrow sees the release of Harder Than It Seemed, the first track from their debut album Beneath the Spreading Tree, which will be released on September 12th.
Sairie are a Brighton trio built around Emma Morton (vocals, autoharp), Jon Griffin (vocals, guitar, harmonium, percussion) and Andy Thomas (bass). Their own evocative description sets the tone better than most: ghosts, fairies, and tragic love; music like a séance; an enchanted visit to the inside of a hollow hill. They’ve once again proven that their music is delightfully unpredictable, blending early-70s folk with otherworldly atmospheres layered over stripped-back arrangements. The icing on the cake is Emma’s captivating vocals, which add a transportive beauty to their music, truly setting them apart.
The accompanying video for Harder Than It Seemed was filmed and edited by Chris Tomsett, perfectly emphasising their trippy folkloric leanings.
We have followed Sairie since 2020, through the EPs Scarlet and Blue and The Trembling Earth, and on to 2022’s The Cinder Sheet, a set of reimagined film themes that caught the ear of Stewart Lee. Beneath the Spreading Tree is their first full-length. Morton and Griffin wrote it, Griffin recorded and mixed it in Newhaven, and Simon Scott mastered it at SPS Audio Mastering. Maria Marzaioli (violin), Alice Eldridge (cello) and Rebecca Tann (accordion) fill out the arrangements.
Vinyl collectors and dedicated fans won’t want to miss their limited-edition 7″ lathe-cut of the single (backed with “The Breeze on the Meadow – Sairie Hour Demo”).
