Made in collaboration with LeRoy Bach, with contributions from drummer Quin Kirchner, and a cameo from Ben Lamar Gay, Marvin Tate’s new album, Controlled Burn, drops on August 29th via Amalgam Music (pre-order via Bandcamp).
In his review of the album, Alex Neilson describes Controlled Burn as a “hallucinogenic portal into a world that’s similar to ours, but the furniture is rearranged, and the pavement convulses beneath your feet like piano keys and shadowy figures stalk the corridors of your neurosis,” later concluding that the “results speak of the angelic geometry of the universe within.”
That hallucinogenic portal becomes a visual reality on the accompanying video for First You Hear, watch it below.
First You Hear is a musical firework exploding in your cerebellum. Clattering drums and ascending guitars fight in midair, with Tate speaking in tongues about meeting a woman “who believed in past lives… and champagne enemas”.
