Jeffrey Silverstein has shared Portland Works, the latest single from his new album Doggone, out 23rd October via Full Time Hobby. It arrives today with an animated visualiser by Squeeeeee Animations.
A full-bodied psychedelic song, Portland Works cruises along on a deep-seated groove and breezy, summer-warmed pacing before tipping into its heaviest stretch at the close. “The outro of this tune is one of the headiest / most psychedelic moments I’ve captured on record,” Silverstein says.
The title comes from a real building. “The first time I went to the UK to tour with Bobby Lee and Joe Harvey Whyte as the Cosmic Country Revue, we gathered in Sheffield for a day and a half of rehearsals,” he explains. “To my delight, the name of the building Bobby’s band rehearsed in was called Portland Works. It felt kismet — another full circle moment where I felt in the right place at the right time.”
The single follows Out of Tune, the Devendra Banhart collaboration we covered in June. Across nine tracks, Doggone meets at the intersection of loner-folk, cosmic country and kraut-laden choogle, the New Jersey native sounding rooted in the Portland community he’s built over the last decade. He recorded it at the Center for Sound, Light and Color Therapy with producer Ryan Oxford (Y La Bamba, Rose City Band), bassist Alex Chapman and drummer Dana Buoy (Akron/Family), and Amy Dragon (Big Thief, Nathaniel Rateliff, Moon Duo) mastered.
That full-circle theme carries onto the road: Silverstein returns to the UK and Sweden this summer for co-headline dates with Bobby Lee — Sheffield among them.
