Jeffrey Silverstein has announced Doggone, his new album, out 23rd October via UK label Full Time Hobby. Marking the announcement, he’s shared lead single Out of Tune, featuring Devendra Banhart on guest vocals.
Meeting at the intersection of loner-folk, cosmic country and kraut-laden choogle, Doggone finds the New Jersey native sounding fully rooted in the creative community around him. Where his previous album, 2023’s Western Sky Music, saw him settling into life in the Pacific Northwest and finding his footing in the alt-Americana sphere he unexpectedly fell into, here he’s immovable, intentional, and most of all, at peace. We announced his move to Full Time Hobby back in April.
He called on a faithful group of Portland collaborators to record the album at the Center for Sound, Light and Color Therapy: producer Ryan Oxford (Y La Bamba, Rose City Band), bassist Alex Chapman and drummer Dana Buoy (Akron/Family), with Amy Dragon (Big Thief, Nathaniel Rateliff, Moon Duo) mastering.
Built around a mellow country groove and dreamy cosmic pedal steel, Out of Tune is a chilled-out love song. “This is a love song,” Silverstein says. “It centers around the concept of being fully in sync with your person, moving through the universe as one while still upholding your individuality. There’s also a nod to one of my favorite tunes of all time, ‘Rollin’ with the Flow’ by Charlie Rich.” Watch the video below.
Across nine tracks, Doggone explores community, aging, carving out your own version of success, planting seeds and growing roots, and the impact of place on creative work.
Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats is among the converted: “Jeffrey’s latest album exists in a world between worlds. One is a nether region of cinematic eyelid movies, definitely set somewhere out west in the nighttime. The other is earthbound and rooted and in daylight and swings with the best of my guys – JJ and Jerry and Dr. John and all the best ones. This is a world I wanna live in… this record is right in my wheelhouse.”
Silverstein heads to the UK and Sweden this summer for co-headline dates with Bobby Lee, following past US runs alongside Steve Gunn, William Tyler, Rose City Band and Widowspeak.
