Blake Wagner is a DJ and critic currently based in New Orleans. Under the alias DJ Mystery Meat, their work has included long-running shows on radio stations KXSC and KCHUNG in Los Angeles, KVRX in Austin, and guest mixes for Dublab, NTS, and Half Moon Radio. Their music writing for In Sheep's Clothing has appeared both online and in print, and they have presented their film scholarship at academic conferences such as the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
We chat to Derek Piotr about his Fieldwork Archive, featuring over 2,000 field recordings. The New England-based folklorist, performer and composer discusses recording total strangers, many of whom have never sung into a microphone before — to elevate someone for a minute to the status of a musician and record a clip of them… and have them celebrated in discussion and reflection… is a huge triumph to me.
