Blake Hornsby’s “Brugmansia” leans heavily into British acid folk, styling its creator as a pointedly anachronistic lysergic troubadour. Songs stretch out as if baking in the sun, existing somewhere between traditional song, avant-garde composition and ancient rite. A strange and beguiling songwriter’s album, “Brugmansia” is a living record defined by real musical ingenuity.
Macdara Yeates announces “Mudlark Ballads,” his second album, due September 4th. Produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox, the album wraps centuries-old Irish folk songs in strings, found-sounds, drones and handclaps. A central figure in Dublin’s folk scene and former Skipper’s Alley member, Yeates follows a debut that earned a MOJO Top 10 and RTÉ Folk Award nominations.
Hollow Hand shares the video for “Heavy Metal T-Shirt,” the final single from fourth album “Wish Road South,” directed by Mega Bog’s Erin Birgy and shot in Dublin. The rowdiest thing on the record, it was tracked live in a studio corridor in Brighton — feedback in the cracks, a singalong chorus, and no shortage of heart.
Jules Reidy shares “Clerestory Windows V,” the final movement of the solo suite from their forthcoming album “Clerestory,” due September 25th via Thrill Jockey. Performed on hex electric guitar with Euclidean sequencing, it is the most pared-back piece on an album that sets a JACK Quartet commission against solo refractions of the same material.
Sam Burton has signed to Captured Tracks and announced “Fairweather Friend,” his third solo album, due October 30th. Lead single “I’m A Stranger,” produced by Jonathan Wilson, arrives with a video by Otium. The album began after a car accident and months of solitary writing in Northern California. Burton joins Widowspeak for UK dates this November.
Ed Askew’s posthumous “The Final Painting” captures the fragile poignance of a great artist in the December of his years, giving one last shake of his feathers before exiting the stage. The album occupies a space between Bowie’s “Blackstar” and Cohen’s “You Want It Darker,” not raging against the dying of the light but dancing towards it with outstretched arms.
Watch Twisted Teens’ Jack Massuci-directed video for “Florida Water Blues,” the title track of their third album on Going Underground Records. The New Orleans band’s second release of 2026 trades the nervous energy of “Blame the Clown” for something more patient and atmospheric, with CPN’s multi-instrumental sprawl and RJ Santos’ steel guitar soaked in Gulf Coast humidity.
Isik Kural has announced “Motorcycles and Cherry Wind,” his third album for RVNG Intl., sharing lead single “Winter Sun” with a video by Barnaby Omar. A twelve-track travelogue shaped by field recordings from Istanbul to Scotland, the album features nine international musicians and follows 2024’s “Moon in Gemini,” one of that year’s most rewarding albums.
Recorded at The Pico Union Project in LA over Valentine’s Day weekend 2025, “Ghosts of American Psychonauts” reworks three tracks from “The Purple Bird” with new instrumentation and draws from across Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s career — including “I See a Darkness,” the title track of his first BPB album. A stellar cast of guests are included.
Sir Richard Bishop’s “Hillbilly Erotica” moves away from the gnarly aggression of “Hillbilly Ragas” into gentler territory, with mostly improvised solo guitar that ebbs and flows with sharp dexterity. The music soars with clusters of notes in places and creates space and quiet with minimal, precise picking in others — minimalist maximalism from a guitarist of remarkable prowess.
Hana Stretton shares the video for “From”, the final single from “tiarn”, her second album out August 7th. Recorded during a storm with a hairbrush, a tiny harp and her dog asleep beside her, it reaches for warmth and connection from the tiny Australian beach town where the album was made.
