Jules Reidy has shared Clerestory Windows V, the second preview from their forthcoming album Clerestory (announced here), due September 25th via Thrill Jockey.
The track is the closing movement of a five-part solo suite occupying the album’s B-side. Where the first preview, an edit of the side-long Shadow Symmetric, presented Reidy’s writing for the celebrated JACK Quartet, Clerestory Windows V strips everything back to Reidy alone on hex electric guitar. Built from Euclidean sequencing and pitch-shifted single guitar tones, it is the most pared-back piece on the album. “It ends with the simplest and most reduced iteration of the piece,” Reidy explains, “and trails off into two oscillating sine tones: the piece’s fundamental and its shadow.”
The Clerestory Windows suite remakes the quartet material as a sequence of solo episodes — like individual panes of stained glass, each offering a different view of the same harmonic world. The five movements progress through MIDI strings, lyrical 12-string guitar, frozen string tones and RMI arpeggios before arriving at this final, elemental piece. Reidy’s approach draws partly on their 2025 Stockholm installation Inside, Crystals and Circuitry. The album builds its harmonic language from two pitch sets that begin at the same point but diverge through different scaling — close but never identical.
Clerestory is Reidy’s second album for Thrill Jockey, following their debut for the label, Ghost/Spirit. The Australian-born, Berlin-based artist has built a body of work spanning solo albums on Shelter Press and collaborations with David Grubbs, Oren Ambarchi and Judith Hamann.
