Styrofoam Winos have shared “Somebody Wants to Send You a Message,” the final single ahead of their new album Any River, out June 19th via Dear Life Records.
The Nashville trio of Lou Turner, Trevor Nikrant and Joe Kenkel built the track around a very modern unease: talking to bots. Kenkel wrote it after re-downloading Messenger to sort out a Facebook Marketplace sale, then waking to a notification reading “somebody wants to send you a message.” It came from a sex-bot, herding him and hundreds of others into a group chat dubbed “Room Full of Passion 4635.” The phrase lodged itself, and a song grew from it.
It almost arrived differently. “It’s wild to remember that we originally wrote this song in half-time, with a country boogie-ish feel,” Kenkel says. The band explored and committed to the faster version instead — an upbeat choogle that nods to the pulsing rock of the B-52’s. At its centre sits a bass clarinet solo from Jim Marlowe, who produced the album and is the only non-Wino to play on it. “Witnessing Jim bring that solo to life was unforgettable,” Kenkel says. “Absolutely face-melting stuff.”
The accompanying video was directed and shot by the band with Hilary Bell, with animations by Nikrant and editing by Kenkel.
Any River follows 2024’s Real Time and is the Winos’ first album recorded outside Nashville, tracked in Louisville with Marlowe. The record has drawn warm words from Bonnie “Prince” Billy:
“I’ve spent some high quality time with these Winos, and they and their music make me feel good. It’s a sweet alignment of forces, cooperative and collaborative. Music City has reasons for reputations good and not-so-much; here on Any River we feel the sunlight-creep of solid vibes, carrying with them reasons to anticipate the forever-uplift of gentle groove.”
