Mallory Hawk will self-release her debut album Chinook on July 31st, 2026. Today she shares the jangly yet lush lead single Revolver, a yearning love song carried by stirring, ascending vocals, along with its accompanying video.
Hawk grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where the chuffing of military aircraft was a daily fact of life. Her father — so attuned to the sound that he could name aircraft without looking up — once told her that the Chinook CH-47 was “the only helicopter in the world that can collide with itself,” its twin-rotor design carrying the seeds of its own destruction. Hawk took the analogy personally: “Even when I was down to the last bit of fuel in my reserve tank, I’d still give away every last drop to nurture and care for others. Routinely channeling my anger into song made me realize that my self-sacrifice had to stop.”
Some readers may already know Hawk from Brooklyn post-punk outfit Customer, Trace Mountains, or touring bassist for Dublin band M(h)aol. Chinook — written entirely by Hawk — is a different proposition: a solo statement that absorbs grunge, post-punk, emo and ’90s alt-rock without sounding beholden to any of them. It was recorded at Philadelphia’s Headroom Studios with producer Sam Acchione (Alex G, Jessica Lea Mayfield), and draws on a cast of local players including Logan Roth, Craig Hendrix and Ava Mirzadegan.
Revolver itself sits inside a loop, its palette deepened by Acchione’s slide fretless baritone guitar. “I was in a never-ending cycle of being a total sucker for someone,” Hawk says. “I’m loyal to a fault, and faulty loyalty is very cyclical — you fool yourself over and over again.”
Of the accompanying video — directed by Colin Acchione — she adds: “I’m a student of the ’90s music video with a brunette singer-songwriter in her sunny loft. I wanted to make a casual video that was just a warm day at home writing the song, which is how it went down in reality. The beginning pays homage to Alanis Morissette’s ‘You Learn’ video, where she begins with a handstand then takes off into her day. I knew I wanted the camera to ‘revolve,’ so my friend Colin pulled together some gadgets and lights and we shot the whole video in my living room. I was dog-sitting my friend’s dogs Connie and Vinny at the time and they really stole the show.”
