In April, Spencer Cullum released his debut follow-up Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection 2. In his album review, Bob Fish concluded that Coin Collection 2: forms a perfect complement to the dawning of spring. It reemerges, holding a looking glass to who we are and still manages to offer hope for what we might become. Although just one man with a pedal steel guitar, Cullum examines a world of endless possibilities. He notes, “I sat for a long time with the songs and wanted to find my own identity.” He and his “nice little crowd of weirdos” have created something truly magical.
Spencer returns to his home turf this month for a small run of shows in August ahead of an appearance at the Green Man Festival (dates below). His band this time will be up of Spencer, Sean Thompson and – for the first time – Erin Rae.
To mark the occasion, Spencer has released a new single, Could We, Canvey. The song is about visiting his father’s childhood home of Canvey Island, Essex, or “the Thames Delta”, as nicknamed by Wilco Johnson (a place also close to the heart of M G Boulter). The song was written with fellow Coins Rich Ruth and Dominic Billett in Nashville, TN, where Spencer now resides.
