Folk Show Episode 7 – Music Featured
Martin Simpson – Thomas Drew
From Martin’s new album out today – Trails & Tribulations. While John Hardy has a well-known song to his name, Martin felt that his victim, Thomas Drew, who was the man shot by Hardy after he won 25 cents from him in a crap game deserved his own song. I couldn’t agree more. Read our Album Review here. Order it here: http://smarturl.it/umdp3x
Edgelarks: Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin – Signposts
We’ve also new music from Edgslarks, the new title of the duo we’ve known as Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin. It’s taken from their forthcoming self-titled album which takes its name from the verb ‘Edgelarks’ – to sing about or from the margins. They wrote Signposts while in Tasmania when, inspired by the people they met, and feeling homesick, they were reminded that music is all about the connections you manage to make with others.
Anne Briggs – Tangled Man
Recently reissued on Earth Records, this is taken from Anne’s 1971 album The Time Has Come. Be sure to read our interview with Anne Briggs here: An Interview with Anne Briggs
Olivia Chaney – Imperfections
From Olivia Chaney’s The Longest River.
Bert Jansch & John Renbourn – After the Dance
From that classic release Bert & John, originally released in 1966.
Lori Watson – The Flytin o Life an Daith
This was one of our Songs of the Day this week and is also Lori’s latest single. Read about it here.
Kathryn Tickell – Hard Times
From kathryn’s Northumbrian Voices (Read our Interview here). You can read about Kathryn’s latest project here: Kathryn Tickell and David Almond with Amy Thatcher: Tales and Tunes
Adam Holmes and The Embers – Whatever It Is You Do
From the Midnight Milk, the forthcoming new album from Edinburgh outfit Adam Holmes & The Embers. The third album from the 26 year old singer-songwriter will be officially released by Gogar Records on Friday 29th September. More on this beauty soon.
Dori Freeman – Bright Lights
Dori Freeman grew up in a family of bluegrass musicians, raised on a diet of Doc Watson and the Louvin Brothers. This Richard Thompson cover is taken from her new album Letters Never Read (out on October 20th). The album was produced by Teddy Thompson and features guest appearances by his dad Richard Thompson, as well as Aoife O’Donovan and Canadian psych-folk duo Kacy & Clayton
Shirley Collins & Davy Graham – Nottamun Town
From Folk Roots, New Routes – released in 1964. An album that’s had a huge influence on the British Folk Scene since.
Martin Simpson – Ridgeway
The gorgeous nature and landscape inspired Ridgeway is a song that grew out of the idea of writing from the point of view of the land.
Solas – The Grey Selchie
From The Words That Remain, the third album from Celtic Folk band Solas (1998).
Fairport Convention – Meet On The Ledge
From the Sandy Denny Boxset – A Boxful Of Treasures (2004)
The Norfolk Broads – Step It Out Mary
The Norfolk Broads are Helen Cherry, Anna Cornish, Eleanor Dale and Daisy Johnson. They enjoy singing low-pitched folk songs about love, despair and dastardly boyfriends. https://thenorfolkbroads.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-valley-of-the-flowers
