Oren Ambarchi’s “Cooked” is two side-length pieces of mysterious beauty in which he goes further through the looking glass. This is ensemble improvisation at its most accomplished, with an international cast of master abstractors. In Drag City, Ambarchi has found a larger platform to bring his mutant blues to the masses. This is a public service which should be applauded because, 100-plus releases in, he’s rarely sounded better.
Taken from his forthcoming album ‘Cooked’, which brings together collaborators from Australia, Germany, Japan and Sweden, and drops this Friday on Drag City, Oren Ambarchi shares the entire 22-minute song, Sleight of Hand, in the form of a short film created by Maximilien Luc Proctor…an equal part lucid and fever dream.
Oren Ambarchi has shared “Hidden Tableau (excerpt)”, the first taste of “Cooked”, out September 25th via Drag City. Eiko Ishibashi’s piano ripples give way to a groaning synthetic voice from Konrad Sprenger, then swarms of guitar and synth arpeggios. Two side-long pieces, an international cast, and the wayward streak that runs under Ambarchi’s minimalism brought right to the front.
Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin’s Ghosted I and II freewheeled across a matrix whose corners were marked by krautrock, ambient, jazz and freely improvised modernism, III adds even more dimensions. It’s the sound of a band who know each other well enough that they can begin to concentrate on the things they don’t yet know, the unexplored musical directions that open up when they play together.
Experimental trio Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin have unveiled “Chahar,” the exhilarating second single from their upcoming album Ghosted III (out August 29th). Pushing further into the exuberant territory hinted at by first single “Yek,” the track is a startlingly funky dance of wild interplay and ricocheting guitar tones, accompanied by a mesmerizing new video ahead of their European tour.
The ever-prolific trio of Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin are completing their Ghosted trilogy. Out August 29th via Drag City, Ghosted III promises a looser, wilder evolution of their signature atmospheric groove. Lead single “Yek” showcases this newfound immediacy, a vibrant and jangling excursion that quickly elevates from a hypnotic roll into a transcendent jam, hinting at the expansive, genre-flirting energy of the full album.
