Oren Ambarchi’s new album, Cooked, arrives this Friday (September 25th) via Drag City. As previously shared, Cooked is two side-long pieces built the way Ambarchi has built his biggest studio records — meticulously constructed all-star jams, contributions gathered from players scattered across several countries and threaded together after the fact. The cast here runs to Joe Talia, Johan Berthling, Will Guthrie, Eiko Ishibashi, Jim O’Rourke, Michiko Ogawa, Marcus Pal, Fredrik Rasten, James Rushford, Isak Hedtjärn, Andreas Werliin and Sprenger.
We’ve already shared an excerpt from Hidden Tableau, but today we are treated to the entire 22-minute song, Sleight of Hand, in the form of a short film created by Maximilien Luc Proctor.
The film stitches together warped images of Oren and others with found footage, colour manipulation, and footage from Lasse Marhaug, who took the photo for the Cooked cover, transporting the viewer to an equal part lucid and fever dream.
Maximilien says: “I shot new material and dove deep into my archive to uncover some digital camera experiments from five years ago. Because my filmmaking style often involves only myself, a camera, and a friend as an actor, the material in ‘Sleight of Hand’ documents a few of my dear friends over a span of several years and multiple formats: 4K video, Super 8, Normal 8mm, and 16mm. I edited the images so they would emphasize, celebrate and catalyze the soundtrack.”
