folk horror

From director Athina Rachel Tsangari, Harvest is a spellbinding, folk horror-inflected tale. Over seven hallucinatory days, a remote village’s traditional way of life is upended by the arrival of outsiders and the trauma of modernity. Led by a striking performance from Caleb Landry Jones, this atmospheric and deeply immersive film chronicles a community on the brink of irrevocable change, crushed by forces that masquerade as progress.

Through 100 years of film and TV footage, Arcadia explores the changing face of the British countryside and our relationship to the land and each other. It takes in folk carnivals and masked parades, harvesting, communes and raves, mechanisation, fires, floods and much more.

Watch ‘The Cunning Man’, a short film inspired by John Harries (1785-1839), a physician and ‘Cunning Man’ from Carmarthenshire – a healer who uses folklore magic.

Arcadia is a new film from Scottish director Paul Wright. Using over 100 archive film clips from the last 100 years and a score by Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) it explores the beauty and brutality, magic and madness of our changing relationship with the land and each other.
