Elanor Moss has shared the video for The Way That it Feels, the second single from her debut album The Knife, The Needle, out August 21st on Merge Records. She has also announced US Tour dates, see below.
The song follows Sarah Waiting in the Car and pulls inward: Moss singing over birdsong and her own classical guitar. The couplets fold back on each other — “Oh and the way that it feels // To know you // Oh and the way it reveals // I don’t know you” — and hang over the rest of the song like a veil. What she’s circling is the paradox at the heart of intimacy: that the more you learn about someone, the more you understand how much stays out of reach.
“This was the last song written for the album, and feels to me like it sums up the spirit of the record,” Moss says. “The more I learn about love the less I know, the more I know about someone, the more I know I don’t know them… love asks us to hold contradiction without giving in to its discomfort. A song about not turning away, but turning towards.”
The video is the second Moss has made with filmmaker Matthew Thorne, again shot on 16mm in the Greek Peloponnese with cinematographer Tasos Chatzis.
The Knife, The Needle runs to nine songs of psych-folk. Moss recorded a first version in New York — “a bit rollocking,” she notes — then set it aside and decamped to a cabin near her parents’ house in the Scottish highlands, chasing something “quieter, weirder, more English,” re-recording with producer Pete Miles.
