Duffy x Uhlmann — the Los Angeles guitar duo of Meg Duffy and Gregory Uhlmann — will release their second album, Hot Creek, on August 14th via Orindal Records, led by new single Public Life and a visualiser directed by Christina Huang.
The record is built around an idea from the poet Adrienne Rich: her “dream of a common language”. Duffy and Uhlmann work inside that frame — two players reaching for each other with nothing but two guitars, building a shared language out of improvisation and trying to close the distance between them. Rosie Stockton’s accompanying note opens on Rich and ends by borrowing her line about doing something very common in your own way, so the idea bookends the whole album.
Hot Creek follows the pair’s 2023 debut, Doubles. Duffy, who records solo as Hand Habits, and Uhlmann have played together in Perfume Genius’ band. Where Doubles came out of urban, one-take improvisations, this one turns towards the natural world, named after the geothermal spring that runs through Mono County, California, with moving water — rapid, eddy, flood — as its guiding image.
New single Public Life is a slow, melancholic piece about seeing and being seen, its calm surface hinting at the currents underneath, something that’s reflected in Huang’s visualiser.
