Hollow Hand, the Brighton project of Max Kinghorn-Mills, will release his fourth album Wish Road South on September 4th via Loose Music. The first single, Here Are The Tulips, lands today with a video directed by Kinghorn-Mills.
He calls it the catalyst for the whole record, a breezy, melodic piece of folk-pop whose lyrics track the bus journey he kept taking to the studio. He recalls “I was listening back after a take and I thought, oh man; there was something about it feeling so live that was magical to me. I remember feeling so happy going home that day knowing that we’d found something. We felt reborn. It’s such a good feeling when something comes together naturally and you don’t force it.”
The title comes from a bus stop on that same route. “There’s this idea of searching for something,” Kinghorn-Mills says, “looking for a guardian angel, trying to find your way and navigate to something that you feel pleased with.”
The album marks a change in method. Since 2023’s Your Own Adventure, Kinghorn-Mills served as house band for Caitlin Rose, collaborated with Aoife Nessa Frances, and supported MJ Lenderman across Europe. He came home wanting to work differently. “The way I’ve made albums previously has usually been huddled away in the tradition of a bedroom producer,” he says. “But with this one I expanded my horizons.”
This time he tracked the songs live with Oliver Newton (drums) and Leo Clarke (bass) at the band’s new Brighton studio. “With three of us being involved from the beginning, and all invested in it together, it feels like a group effort, which is a new thing for us.”
Hollow Hand tour the UK through October, opening in Leeds on October 13th and closing in Brighton on October 30th.
