Paris-based singer-songwriter Aure has released her debut album, printemps, today via Mayway Records. To mark its arrival, she shares The Beginning, the album’s key single, accompanied by a film directed by Johanna Bennaïnous, a visual artist and filmmaker known for her work as part of the duo Elsa & Johanna.
As we noted when featuring earlier single A ti te tengo back in January, printemps is an album of thresholds, written in the space where one chapter ends and another begins. The Beginning distils that idea into a single track — its lyrics reflect on the end of a cycle while embracing the promise of renewal that follows. The accompanying film invites viewers into a sensory in-between, a tipping point where the everyday feels laden with meaning and a once-closed world slowly begins to open.
Aure describes the album as evoking “a new beginning and shifting bearings, a turbulent crossing toward a safer place, much like the migration of birds.” Her songwriting draws on the poetic minimalism of Atahualpa Yupanqui, Facundo Cabral, and Leonard Cohen, the mysterious force of Lhasa, Jessica Pratt, and Nico, and the precise economy of Bertrand Belin — influences that intertwine across multiple languages, reflecting different facets of her identity. Visually, the world of printemps is shaped by Graciela Iturbide’s photography, Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire, and the intimate collages of Katrien De Blauwer.
All songs on the album were composed by Aure, produced and arranged by Corentin Ollivier, and mixed by Taissa Arruda. Having arrived at music after a previous career in architecture, Aure has already established herself as a vital voice in contemporary European folk — her 2023 EP a few notes earned praise from Télérama, France Inter, and Les Inrockuptibles, and led to tour support slots with Andy Shauf and Tom McRae.
