In a garden shed in Nashville, Spencer Cullum found an escape from the “hatred and vitriol” of the modern world. Today, the British-born pedal steel savant announces “Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection 3”, the final instalment of his acclaimed trilogy, arriving on March 27th via Full Time Hobby.
To navigate the climate crisis and late-stage capitalism, Cullum turned to England’s ancient folklore. “I felt more settled in that,” he says of the standing stones and occult tales that haunt the record. The first single, “Rowan Tree,” is out today, featuring a hand-drawn stop-motion video by Gaia Alari.
Regarding the visuals, Alari shared: “The song evokes an old folk tale and its mysterious atmosphere, so I wanted to tell the story through interweaving morphings, characters and symbols. I focused also on creating a clash between ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ in its Jungian definition, hinting at the broader topic of man versus nature. All together I hope the visuals evoke feelings of magic, mystery and a nuanced range of emotions that could compliment the lyrics and music.”
Though born in isolation, the album is a communal feat. Collaborative “scraps of paper” were sent from across the globe: Oisin Leech tracked vocals in Ireland, while Allison De Groot recorded banjo on an iPhone backstage. These contributions, alongside work from Erin Rae and Annie Williams, were mixed to cassette to create a masterful, tactile oeuvre.
While Coin Collection 3 marks the end of this specific chapter, Cullum is already looking forward. “I’m wrapping up something new for later in 2026… stay tuned.”
