Just over a year since Ghosted II was hailed by KLOF Mag’s Thomas Blake for its “indecently accomplished” compositions, the improvisational supergroup of guitarist Oren Ambarchi, bassist Johan Berthling, and percussionist Andreas Werliin are set to return with Ghosted III. Arriving August 29th via Drag City, the album finds the trio channelling the confidence gained from extensive touring into more immediate and exuberant territory, captured over three days at Stockholm’s Studio Rymden.
This shift was first signalled by the lead single, “Yek.” On that track, Berthling’s rolling bass provides a familiar foundation, but it’s Ambarchi’s uncharacteristically bright, jangling guitar that lifts the piece into an airy, spiralling groove, culminating in a powerful and immensely satisfying chord change.
Now, the second single “Chahar” pushes that energy even further. Continuing the trend, “Chahar” presents a looser, wilder interplay between the three musicians. Ambarchi’s signature guitar tones multiply and cascade, threatening to overwhelm the foundational, “stalwart strut” laid down by Berthling and Werliin. The track evolves into a startlingly funky dance, as dazzling ricochets of notes and percussive strikes forge a steady roll of undulating beat variations. The single is paired with another stunning video from director Maximilien Luc Proctor—who also helmed the video for “Yek”—which frames the sonic chaos around a bush that warps in the wind like an ocean tide.
Across its six sprawling tracks, Ghosted III reportedly carries an exploratory torch, venturing beyond their established zones of ambient neo-jazz into the kinetic energy of prog and the angular hooks of new wave. With two dynamic singles now released, the album promises to be the most surprising instalment of the trilogy yet. Fans can experience this evolution live during their European tour this autumn, which includes a stop at London’s ICA on September 16th.
