Echolalia are a new Nashville-based group featuring friends Spencer Cullum, Andrew Combs, Jordan Lehning and Dominic Billett. They’ve all known each other for years, played together at different times but never altogether as a band. As they say: the process was an open book with no objectives and no judgment – just a goal of people enjoying making music. Their self-titled album is set for release on 24th February via Full Time Hobby.
“It was Jordan Lehning that decided to put it together,” says songwriter and pedal steel wizard Spencer Cullum. “I told Jordan about this studio in a really desolate area on the Isle of Wight that a friend of mine runs called Chale Abbey. It’s a beautiful old building from 1160 where monks used to live. The studio owners completely renovated it. Jordan had this idea – the four songwriters would have three songs and we’d work together to make a record of it”.
The vibes of the remote location have clearly seeped into the music; multi-instrumentalist Jordan Lehning: “Going out to the middle of nowhere, where the coast is a seven minute walk, and in the wintertime, it’s cold and foggy and beautiful… there’s really nothing like it”.
The band also features bass player Eli Beaird and Juan Solorzano on guitar and synth with Jason Lehning in the engineering seat.
Their debut single ‘Odd Energy’ sounds like they may have collectively tapped into an ancient leyline in old England as the psychedelic vibes on this are outstanding…the only thing missing on that plate are the mushrooms.
