Jenny Sturgeon & Boo Hewerdine have today revealed their new indie-folk duo project Outliers which gets a delightfully meditative kickoff with their timely-titled lead single ‘The Longest Day‘. The song is taken from their forthcoming self-titled album, due for release later this year on Hudson Records.
The track opens to a steady mid-tempo beat, subtle synths and a field recording of lapping water. Minimalist arrangements with just the briefest of guitar strums bring a focus to Jenny’s delivery of the equally simple lyrics that seem so at home in these calm lapping waters. As we join Jenny on a relaxing walk, the song’s meditative effect is heightened still further by the harmonious repeated refrain ‘Went out walking’.
Written and recorded between Jenny & Boo’s homes in Glasgow and Shetland during 2020/21, the duo have struck the perfect balance…lyrically and musically, their stripped-back approach to ‘The Longest Day’ delivers surprising poetic depth. It is also our Song of the Day.
The Longest Day is available to download via Bandcamp and can be streamed today.
We’ll be bringing you more details on the album soon.
