The KLOF series of mixes are intended to be more alternative and with an experimental leaning. The latest, features music from Xochimoki, Angel Bat Dawid, Arthur Russell, Joseph Allred, Deer Scout, Warren Ellis, Kinbrae & Clare Archibald, Bird In The Belly, Officer!, Josephine Foster, Rokia Koné & Jacknife Lee, Avalanche Kaito, MacGillivray, Magic Tuber Stringband, Nick Jonah Davis, Satomimagae, Steve Gunn.
“Transition East” was created by Angel Bat Dawid in response to Emma Warren’s 2019 book “Make Some Space” – i.e. the book that chronicles the history of London DIY music institution Total Refreshment Centre. – “Angel Bat Dawid, who first met Emma Warren at Total Refreshment Centre in 2017, composed & recorded “Transition East” alone in her space on the Southside of Chicago, originally to be accompaniment for the audiobook version of “Make Some Space.” Angel conceptualized & named the song in commemoration of the storied Chicago community center that was a hub for the AACM and icons from the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s, and was recently revived by one of her mentors, Eliel Sherman Storey.” Read more and purchase via Bandcamp here.
We have another track (see previous mix – Folk Show 113) from Bird in the Belly and their latest offering ‘After the City‘, a concept album that provides a kind of musical prequel to Richard Jefferies visionary novel and also one of our Featured Albums of the Month, reviewed here (out on 25th Feb – Pre-Order via Cargo Records). Don’t miss their album launch show on Sat 26th Feb – The Harrison at Kings Cross, London with New Roots promotions (Tickets).
‘Birl of Unmap’ also featured on our last Folk Show and is the first collaborative album from Kinbrae – in their own words: the project of twin brothers Mike and Andy Truscott – and writer / artist Clare Archibald. Hailing from the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland, the trio has forged a new practice in creative dialogue and sonic experimentation, exploring abstract notions of ‘place’ and deconstructing its innate rhythms and sonic totems.
Drawing on academic research, oral histories, and the experiences of other Fife-based artists, as well as former miners and residents of the site, ‘Birl of Unmap’ stands as more than the sum total of aesthetic tropes, embodying an ambitious call to consider how we balance our own experiences and understandings with those of others. This is an invitation to wander through the layers and perhaps find something more of ourselves within them. Read more here.
Also featured is MacGillivray’s In My End Is My Beginning – inspired by the words of Mary Queen of Scots. “The lyrics are set to dulcitone and embedded with air recorded at many of the places she lived, was imprisoned and died in. With influences from French Chanson, the troubadour tradition and contemporaneous composition by William Byrd, for example, the record showcases lyrics by the doomed hunchback secretary and guitar tutor David Riccio or Rizzio and transposes sonnets and letters by Mary herself.” More here.
