EFDSS return once again with one of our favourite video series, “In The Archive With…” in which they invite an artist to the Cecil Sharp House music archives to select some favourite tunes. While it’s a daunting task, the choices artists make are always fascinating.
In the case of Peggy Seeger, she knew most of the artists she selected, including Margaret Barry, a track featuring fisherman and traditional singer Sam Larner, taken from the first Radio Ballad ‘Singing the Fishing’ which Peggy made with her husband Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker. Peggy also plays ‘Four Loom Weaver’ by Ewan and ‘San Francisco Bay Blues’ by Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, both of which were released on Topic Records.
She touches on the vinyl formats released on Topic, which neatly leads to a question on streaming music and her feelings on the perilous nature of storing everything digitally.
I won’t spoil it anymore; watch it below.
Peggy has also announced details of her first Farewell Tour for Spring 2022, details of which you can find below. She will be performing with her son Calum MacColl at venues across the UK, including art centres, theatres and civic halls, as well as a couple of tiny village halls and a performance in a launderette! The tour follows on from her ‘First Farewell’ album, which we reviewed here.
Peggy, now 86, says: “First Farewell is an odd title for a CD or a tour, but it looks both forward and back as I have tried to do in my life. I have toured all over the globe since I was twenty and it is always a delight, a new adventure. I am an activist, an advocate, a left-winger, an eco-feminist, a singer of traditional and topical songs, trying to speak in my own way for my own time. This may be the last time, but then again it may not ….”
