This Friday, Boo Hewerdine returns with two brand new songs, Wanderlust (which premieres below) and Listen. The acclaimed songwriter, producer has recently re-located to Glasgow and these songs are the first fruits of the sessions for his next studio album, due in 2021 on Reveal Records.
From the single’s cover, depicting a long winding road, to the freewheeling opening of arpeggiated flutes which give the feeling of being at the mercy of a breeze, lifting then settling, and even the piano which has an air of non-committal to it…the scene-setting and backdrop for Wanderlust is painted before Hewerdine even sings. When he does, that deep feeling of loneliness and longing for home can be really felt. The whole song is so well crafted and executed. It’s also totally absorbing, so much so that when it finishes it doesn’t feel like those 3 minutes have passed at all. It’s also our Song of the Day.
Boo Hewerdine on Wanderlust:
In these strange times, we have had to create new ways of making music. After years on the road, it’s been an adjustment to be home all the time. And yet, like so many of us, I have been travelling through a screen. I’ve been writing songs with people from everywhere. Slovakia, New Mexico, Ireland and just round the corner. I have written songs with people that I would not have if it wasn’t for the virus. It has been, without doubt, the most productive time. I miss playing live but my need to roam has been sated in new ways.
Wanderlust started in a serendipitous way. Rachel Haden (ex-That Dog) in LA is the singer in my son’s band (Simon & The Astronauts) She sent me a two-minute recording of a piano piece she was working on. After I had sung it I sent it to Gustaf Ljunggren in Copenhagen where he added a beautiful soundscape. From there it travelled back to Glasgow where Mark Freegard did the final mix. Ironic that a song called Wanderlust has been around the world.
