Nominated 32 times in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, 13 of those as Musician of the Year, Martin Simpson has to be regarded as one the UK’s greatest guitarists and most treasured song writers.
Martin has collaborated and performed with countless other artists, Roy Bailey, June Tabor and Jackson Browne to mention just a few. He has featured on ‘Later with Jools Holland’ and been awarded and nominated for so many awards there are too many to count! In recent years, alongside his solo projects, he has been part of projects with Dom Flemons, The Full English, Simpson Cutting Kerr and The Elizabethan Session all of which received rave reviews.
2019 saw Martin record and release ‘Rooted” and bonus album ‘Seeded’ on the incredible Topic Records, the album continued his relationship with Sheffield producer Andy Bell and features, John Smith, Nancy Kerr, Liz Hanks, Andy Cutting, Ben Nichols, Dom Flemons, Chris While, Julie Matthews, Alan Barnes, Max Simpson, Amy Smith and Richard Hawley.
Rooted, is another triumphant album from an artist still operating at the highest level anywhere in the world. The musical variety and the virtuosity from all members here is superb, and the pacing and choice of songs is perfect. I would also recommend the version that includes Seeded, a little bundle of instrumentals that works beautifully alongside the main set. Rooted is an album of rich material put to wonderful music that all combines to result in a release that is an essential career highlight from the most inimitable of musicians.
