Over the years, Tompkins Square has been the early label home for a host of exceptional talents including William Tyler, Ryley Walker, Hiss Golden Messenger, Brigid Mae Power and more. Their latest signing is Sam Burton, from Salt Lake City, now based in Los Angeles and after listening to his new single, there is no doubt in our mind that Sam will soon be joining those ranks. This is a name you’re not going to forget.
After several years circulating homemade cassettes on labels like Chthonic and embraced by blogs like Cassette Gods, Sam has recorded his first proper debut album with producer Jarvis Taveniere (Purple Mountains, Woods). Due in mid-2020, the LP will be preceded by two limited edition 45s.
You can watch the video for the first of those singles below with “I Can Go With You” (directed by Madelynn De La Rosaon) on which Sam tells us:
“I was writing a song a day for 30 days as a personal challenge to myself. I Can Go With You came near of that practice and I considered it a throwaway at the time. After recording most of the album I still needed a couple more songs and decided to throw it on and we recorded it live followed by two others. When I listened back it ended up being one of the tracks I was happiest with on the record.”
“I Can Go With You” is also our Song of the Day.
