In a new video series from EFDSS, Jon Boden heads to the Cecil Sharp House sound archive to share some his favourite albums from their incredible collection. I have to say up front that I could watch this sort of thing all-day so I hope EFDSS have plenty more lined up.
Jon’s first choice is a compilation that was released on Claddagh Records featuring seven Irish master pipers among them being the great Séamus Ennis. I know that this album opens with Jenny’s Welcome to Charlie which is a blinder of a tune. If you’ve not heard The Bonny Men’s version of this on their new album ‘The Broken Pledge’ then make sure you also listen to Lost in Transmission No 53 here where I recently featured it.
In between choices, Jon also shares some stories and reveals that his father once purchased him a set of pipes and that he attended the world-famous Willy Clancy week in Co. Clare when he was 16. Just imagine how the folk scene may have changed if he’d stuck with the pipes…
Then onwards to Steeleye Span, John Jacob Niles and The Wilson Family…all great fun. Watch it below:
Jon Boden is at Cecil Sharp House on March 7th performing solo. He will be presenting the self-penned songs of the albums Painted Lady and Songs From The Floodplain and latest album Afterglow, material from Bellowhead, Spiers & Boden and his A Folk Song A Day project, his critically acclaimed and enthusiastically received solo shows have confirmed him as one of the foremost names in English folk music.
