Our Song of the Day comes from Northern Flyway (out this autumn on Hudson Records), a joint project between Inge Thomson and Jenny Sturgeon. As seen with their past work, they both care deeply about protecting the natural environment, and on this latest album, they join forces to explore birdsong, ecology, folklore and themes of migration and movements of birds and humans.
Loch Carron Flame is both timely and important, there is a consultation underway which closes on 13th June with a proposal to designate Loch Carron as a nature conservation Marine Protected Area (MPA), with an associated Marine Conservation Order (MCO) which Inge explains more on below. Please help share this news through your friends and contacts…as Inge says, anyone can lend their voice, the more, the stronger.
“This song left the ground as a harsh, but simple journey undertaken by the white-fronted geese between Greenland and Argyll via Iceland. During this time, news came in of the unintentional decimation of our rare and precious flame shell colonies in Loch Carron, which lies squarely in the flight path of the geese, so the song took a sorrowful turn. Flame shell and maerl beds are essential to our inshore ecosystems and must be protected. There is a proposal to designate Loch Carron as a nature conservation MPA with a public consultation under way – see here https://consult.gov.scot/marine-scotland/loch-carron-mpa/ anyone can lend their voice. In the meantime here’s the geese singing goodbye to the shells, from the forthcoming Northern Flyway album which flies out this autumn on Hudson Records.”
