Adam Gnade, quite easily the most asked about artist I play on this show, released a concept EP a couple of years back called Greater Mythology Blues. It was released with no fan-fare, no press release, nothing. If you didn’t look for it, you’d never know it was there.
“I knew it would be my least well received record. No hits. No dance songs”.
Adam didn’t even want individual songs from this EP to be played on the radio, feeling it needed to be heard in context, as a whole. Well, I say it’s time to give this beautiful piece of music it’s due, to play it on air in it’s entirety.
Spanning a few thousand years of history, Greater Mythology Blues follows two separate family lines from pre-American nomadic wandering (circa 942 BCE) to the “American Indian wars” of the mid 1800s and up to modern day. A quiet, bloody, noise-damaged, troubled set of songs, Greater Mythology Blues looks to take pieces of American roots musics and deconstruct (then reconstruct) them into something new.
