Back in July Anne reviewed Laura Veirs ninth album Warp and Weft (read it here). She described it as “a dense, even ruggedly orchestral sonic adventure exploring…the motherhood juxtaposition of overwhelming love and intense fear”. In her latest video for the song America those fears are made very real and hard-hitting. The video, directed by Whitey MacConnaughy, gives a visual interpretation of Veirs’ indictment of the current gun culture in the US. Veirs comments…
“My goal with the song was to write about our rampant gun culture in a way that is anthemic and up-beat. I take it all very seriously as I am a new mother and very concerned about the safety of my kids and of people in general in this country. It’s become a public health issue that could be addressed with stricter gun control and background checks. I wanted to hook people into the song with the melodic, up-beat feeling while also highlighting how bad things have become here.”
