This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original release of THE WICKER MAN. Earlier this year Stuiocanal announced its intention to restore and release in UK cinemas the most complete version of the film possible from original material still in existence.
The film has now been restored and to mark its re-release there will be a special screening tonight at the Curzon Soho cinema in London (Friday 27 September at 6.30pm) followed by a special performance from The Memory Band, who will play songs from the film as well as selections from Paul Giovanni’s score. The line-up will include Stephen Cracknell, Hannah Caughlin (The Bicycle Thieves & The Accidental), Fred Thomas (F-IRE Collective, The Beguilers), Olie Brice and Danyal Dhondy.
For several years, The Memory Band have toured music and songs from Paul Giovanni’s haunting soundtrack to The Wicker Man, including to great acclaim at Glastonbury, Green Man and the Big Chill festivals, as well as on the Southbank for Caught By The River.
One of the great British horror films and a genuine cult classic, The Wicker Man successfully blends folklore with post-60s psychedelia, as Edward Woodward’s police officer investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island. However, the locals claim she never existed. As he probes deeper into village life, he suspects something darker to be at work. If you have yet to see this film, read nothing else about it and prepare to be surprised.
