Irish Folk Furniture is a short film by director and filmmaker Tony Donoghue which has recently won Best Animation at the Sundance Film Festival…after watching it you’ll see why. Tony used a £150 secondhand camera and decided to use stop animation to give life to the antique furniture….together with the lovely rural Irish scenery and interviews he has created a magical and often very funny film…watch carefully during the interview with the man who made the flour bins as he tells how there used to be a demand for them as there was mice in the houses…at which point one comes scurrying along the floor.
Tony not only shows the on-going importance of a tradition but he also provides a delightful glimpse into its social significance. I’ve watched it serveral times now and I still come away with a smile on my face.
