River Lea is a record label run by Geoff Travis & Jeannette Lee of Rough Trade along with music journalist Tim Chipping. We chat with Tim about how the label came to be which features Lisa O’Neill, Ye Vagabonds and Brìghde Chaimbeul, all of whom have picked up BBC Folk Award nominations this year.
Our Song of the Day is “I Courted A Wee Girl” by Irish duo Ye vagabonds. The video is an excerpt from “Seven Songs On Six Islands” a documentary by Myles O’Reilly, filmed during their tour of some of Ireland’s most picturesque islands.
Yet another fine addition to the River Lea record label – Irish folk music is in a very healthy state at the moment and with The Hare’s Lament, Ye Vagabonds have emerged as its most accomplished exponents.
Our Song of the Day comes from an Irish duo that I never tire of hearing – Brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn, better known as Ye Vagabonds. Here they are performing Tuirse Mo Chroí during Sidmouth Folk Week this year.
Coming up in July and August, folk/trad duo Ye Vagabonds are set to embark on a tour of some of Ireland’s most picturesque islands as part of a new series by Islander music company.
Ye Vagabonds possess a strong and distinctive musical identity that celebrates its own individuality and certainly stands out from the crowd. There’s food for thought aplenty here in this stimulating debut album. We look forward to seeing where they lead us next.
Ahead of their highly anticipated self-titled debut album due out Friday 13th October, brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn, who form Ye Vagabonds, have released the second single “Half Blind” with an accompanying video made by filmmaker Myles O’Reilly.
Watch ‘Song Long Forgotten’, the first single from brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn who make up Dublin-based Ye Vagabonds. Their self-titled debut album is due for release on 13th October 2017.
