the self help group

Brighton’s best-kept secret, The Self Help Group, return with a new single ‘The Finger’, an uptempo, driving and melodic song that ponders why, if at all, it’s wrong to show someone your middle finger.

The Self Help Group enlisted the help of friends, family and some well known faces for their latest video – Smile Club which is also our Song of the Day.

The Self Help Group take the lives of others and, in their telling or adaptation, bring insightful, poignant and compassionate observations that touch on what it means to be human, enfolding these in melodies that draw on the very best of classic West Coast Americana.

Under a new Union Music Store project a number of prominent folk singers give their response to the 2015 election result with a new album of contemporary protest songs. Listen to one of them with the new video from Lucy Ward for ‘Bigger Than That’.

We continue our look at the Best Albums of 2013. In part 2 we include Jackie Oates, Jack Day, Blue Rose Code, The Leisure Society, Richard Thompson, Éamonn Coyne & Kris Drever & many more!

‘Not Waving, But Drowning charms’ the listener on every level – the three part harmonies are spine-tingling, the expansive arrangements warm and inviting, and the lyrical content fascinating. A wider audience must surely follow.
