The Burning Hell

Newcastle legend Nev Clay shares “I flew a flag” – “I’m mindful that it’s a topic that’s been in the news, but the song’s about something else entirely. I’ve been thinking a lot too about my friend and local musical hero George Welch, who passed away last week.” Nev also has a Newcastle show on September 4th with The Burning Hell and Jon McKiel…this will be a bit special.

The Burning Hell’s ‘Ghost Palace’ may sound like an acceptance of Earth’s fate, but there are subtle signs that life…in a way, the diversity that artists like Kom bring to the world is one of the things that make it a future worth fighting for.

Watch the video for The Burning Hell’s new single “Bottle of Chianti, Cheese and Charcuterie Board”, an off-kilter synth and double-bass hip shaker (with a banjo solo)…there is slapstick and dancing and costumes.

On Hardly Working, The Burning Hell’s Ariel Sharratt and Matthias Kom team up with Shotgun Jimmie on a multifaceted and highly satisfying piece of work. They are on tour now in the UK.

This April, Ariel Sharratt & Mathias Kom (of The Burning Hell) will tour the UK bringing their 2020 album ‘Never Work’ to life in a collaboration with visual artist and indie rock legend Shotgun Jimmie.

Watch Bird Queen Of Garbage Island, the new single from Canada’s garage-folk oddballs The Burning Hell. The accompanying video was created by the award-winning New Brunswick multi-media artist Graeme Patterson. They are on tour in the UK this month.

Never Work is by far Kom’s most impassioned and political lyrical statement to date. Augmented by Sharratt’s superb, understated singing and musicianship, it shows just how relevant protest music is, and how much fun it can be.

The Burning Hell’s ‘Revival Beach’ is about the end of everything. But it is no less wise, funny or musically assured than its predecessor Public Library (easily one of the best records of 2016). Kom’s writing is a breath of fresh air, and I can think of few songwriters I’d rather spend the apocalypse with.

Our Canadian-based reviewer David Morrison selects his Top 10 Folk & Roots albums of 2016 including David Francey, Jesse Thom, Aerialists, John K. Samson, Emily Millard and more.

Mathias Kom, along with his band The Burning Hell deliver an album that is easily their best to date. One that proves there is more to this anarchic, self-consciously verbose band than jokes. Public Library is an album of surprising emotional depth and musical variety.
