Shirley Collins’ personal memoir ‘All In The Downs: Reflections on Life, Landscape and Song’ which was published by Strange Attractor has won the Penderyn Music Book Prize.

Even when surrounded by the nascent folk-rock of the Albion Band, Shirley’s voice rings out true, true to the tune and true to the song. It still rings out true today and what a most fitting album to present to a new generation to listen to and learn from.

Fifty years on, Shirley Collins returns to London’s Roundhouse… It is hard to imagine anyone who deserves to be on that stage more than Shirley Collins, as the ovations and cheering voices tonight will attest.

Tonight, 83-year old Shirley Collins will travel from her home in Lewes to BBC Broadcasting House for a rare, live interview with Cerys Matthews on her Radio 2 Blues Show ahead of her performance at London’s Roundhouse on 31 January.

The Ballad of Shirley Collins soundtrack is a great springboard to find out more. It is also an anthology, or a miscellany, that whilst having a foot back in time – sixty years ago and even before that – it also has a foot in the present.
