sean nos

Our Song of the Day comes from Irish sean-nós singer Nell Ní Chróinín performing An Chóisir TG4’s Bosca Ceoil.

Lorcán Mac Mathúna’s latest project, ‘The Deep End Of The Ford’, takes us even further back in time than his last release; in a telling of the famous An Táín Bó Cualaigne (The Cattle Raid of Cooley) – An Táin.

★★★★★ Robert Doyle’s fingerstyle guitar playing, and the guitar’s mesmerizing tone, are the main draws of ‘Life In Shadows’. His guitar style benefits from the influence of his former tutor, French-Algerian guitarist Pierre Bensusan and his emotional vocal performances owe much to the Sean-Nos style.

Northern Lights is a blending of Norse and Irish: sagas, stories, soundscapes, cultural flavours and perspectives, through a meeting of their music and songs. It is a project of Lorcán Mac Mathúna, Raphael De Cock and James Mahon.

Lorcan Mac Mathuna talks about Sean nós, a traditional unaccompanied style of singing in Irish that, in recent times, existed only in the furthest reaches of Ireland’s landscape.
