Sally Anne Morgan

Sally Anne Morgan is the latest guest on Thrill Jockey’s Deep Digs series, in which artists share their favourite Thrill Jockey releases. Sally’s choices include Jimmy Martin, Jack Rose & D. Charles Speer & The Helix, Elena Setien, and Sidi Toure. We recently reviewed Sally’s new album, Second Circle the Horizon, which was released on June 20th.

Sally Anne Morgan’s Second Circle the Horizon continues in a similar vein to 2021’s ‘Cups’ while leaning gently on some of the slightly broader-sounding arrangements on her other albums. The result is spot on: a quiet, sometimes enigmatic celebration of the purity of nature and life through the lens of versatile music inspired by the Appalachian tradition. It’s her most cohesive and accomplished album so far.

Taken from her forthcoming new album, Second Circle The Horizon, Sally Anne Morgan shares her new single “Flowers of Shandihar”. The inspiration for the title came from an archaeological dig in Iraq, where Neanderthals buried their dead with flowers. Her earthy banjo loop and soaring fiddle melodies are enchanting, a testament to her intuitive approach, proving that sometimes, the most sophisticated sounds come from the most organic methods.

Taken from her new album, Second Circle The Horizon, listen to Sally Anne Morgan’s latest single ‘Eye is the First’ – a rustling journey featuring a repeated slow guitar appregios and a more narrative-sounding banjo with organic sounding shimmering rustles conjuring the gentle movement of a breeze. While meditative, it also joyously reveals Morgan’s deep bond with nature and how she intuitively interweaves this into her creations.

Sally Anne Morgan announces her new album, Second Circle The Horizon. Listen to her first album single, “I Saw a Heron” – “I wanted to capture the feeling of walking outside and encountering organic nature sounds”

Talking about “Carrying”, Sally Anne Morgan says: “So much of what we accumulate and carry around with us burdens us, but we also can’t or don’t know how to let go.” Through her music, she leaves you feeling that, in a world full of perils, love can surely overcome all.

Sally Anne Morgan announces her third solo album ‘Carrying’ and shares lead single ‘The Center’, on which she showcases her more lush, elaborate arrangements; it’s also our Song of the Day.

Cups, the latest offering from Sally Anne Morgan, is a stunner…the music challenges and wonderfully brings to mind the magic and intricacies of nature and rural life. This is a highly creative, rich and detailed piece of work.

Listen to “Prune”, the lead single from Sally Anne Morgan’s new solo album “Cups”, described as being in stark contrast to the traditional and pop-informed structures of her last album Thread.

Thread is a wonderful, deeply thought out, rich and engaging album that manages to sound completely original within the parameters of its musical roots.

An extra special treat at the end of the week as North Carolina folk duo House and Land pay a visit to the home of Shirley Collins and perform Ca the Yowes for her. Watch the video here.

On House and Land’s “Across the Field” a diverse collection of traditional songs are delicately handled and the excellent musicianship is carefully woven into the fibre of the songs, instilled with their own beauty and creativity.
