I can’t fault the playing here one jot, nor indeed the production quality of Volunteer, nor for that matter the songs themselves which clearly display both affection and craft. But I’m left with a nagging feeling that there’s more than a hint of contrivance, “adopting a role” and being all things to all listeners with this album.

Old Crow medicine Show pay tribute to Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde, celebrating the truly seminal, cross-fertilising nature of the original record. I fully expect there to be claims that this set is destined to take its place amongst the great live sets of rock history.

The years covered by these recordings were a golden period for Old Crow Medicine Show. For anyone who wants to know what fuelled the, now widespread, musical chimaera, “modern old time”, this is essential listening.
