Yesterday evening Mike Vass shared ‘They never found me’, the opening track from his forthcoming solo album ‘Save His Calm’. He announced on Twitter that “This is the first time the world will hear my singing on record!” It’s also our Song of the Day.

Newly Commissioned by the Scots Fiddle Festival, The Four Pillars is a multi-media experience and musical suite from Scottish musician Mike Vass which premieres on Friday 16th November at the Pleasance Theatre, Edinburgh.

After fitting out his boat as a combined living space and recording studio, Mike Vass invited various friends aboard to record some music – and the delightful result is his latest album – Notes From The Boat. Warm, engaging melodies and sparkling performances combine with Mike’s peerless skills as an arranger for a truly delightful album.

This week’s Folk Show features rituals, Cuckoos, poachers, Lapwings, Gypsies and a Golden Plover to name just a few of the themes that crop up in the folk songs we’ve pulled together. We’ve also got a sneak peek at some advance releases from Martin Simpson, Tom Russell, The Young’uns and Mairearad Green and Mike Vass plus more.

A mix of high-energy fiddle-driven along by expressive and imaginative piano; compelling songs with perfectly executed, intricate vocals and a level of musicianship that is an affirmation of the collective skill these four highly accomplished musicians.

For those that missed it last time The Dead Stations, written by Charlotte Hathaway with music and lyrics by Mike Vass, is back and and will be performed at Edinburgh’s Hidden Door Festival at the end of May.

On Friday night, at The Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, The Dead Stations came to the end of its first Scottish tour. The audience had the additional treat of a solo performance from Mairi Campbell.
